How To Play Quzzl.us
Quzzl.us is remarkably easy to play. Simply log on and begin. A single Quzzl is put before you. Solve it correctly and
you are presented with the next Quzzl. Solve that one, and the next becomes visible. Solve all the Quzzls quicker than
everyone else and you've won!!! It's that easy!
- There's just 10 Quzzls to solve!
- Enter your answer in the space provided beneath each Quzzl. (Answers are case-insensitive).
- Only the Team Captain can buy hints and solve the Quzzls, so make sure you (or one--and only one--of your teammates) indicates they are the Captain during log-in.
Play Quzzl.us in different Ways
- Play INDEPENDENTLY as your own team of one. Launch a Quzzl, be your own captain, and continue at your own pace.
No pressure. No deadlines. Just the enjoyment of testing your wits.
- Play COOPERATIVELY as a team with friends and/or family. (Other team members can view the Quzzls on their own device, but may have to log-out/on to refresh their view when Quzzls are solved or Clues are
purchased.)
- Play COMPETITIVELY against your friends, family, co-workers, or against other Quzzl.us participants. Fastest time wins!
Success depends on how you Play
- Playing Independently or Cooperatively
- Did you have fun? You win! You can check the statistics page to judge how you compare with others that have played the game.
- Playing Competitively
- Did you have fun? You win too! But let's face it, you're fun is doubled when you not only solve every Quzzl but crush the other Teams in the process (in a very friendly way of course).
- When playing Quzzl.us competitively, the winner is the Team that solves the most Quzzls in the shortest amount of TOTAL Time wins.
- When you begin, Quzzl.us tracks the amount of actual time your Team uses to solve each Quzzl.
- Quzzl.us also adds the cost of any Hints you may have purchased to your Total Time:
Clue Time + Hint Time = TOTAL TIME
- Remember that once a Quzzl is started, your Quzzl.us Timer keeps running--even if you close your browser and/or shut down your computer.
- Upon completion of each Quzzl you are given the opportunity to 'pause' your Timer until you want to resume, but once a Quzzl is started, the clock keeps running until it is solved.
- In competitive matches, use the Quzzl.us 'Scores' tab, to keep track of your opponents progress as well as your own. Careful attention to
the "race" aspects of Quzzl.us as well as the cost and availability of hints may positively influence your game strategy.
Quzzl Tips
Quzzls
See a Quzzl? Solve it! It's that easy! Or is it? Quzzls might be trivially easy or fiendishly difficult...and that's the fun!
When solving a Quzzl, you may encounter various types of challenges:
- Codes and Ciphers - Some Quzzls use various methods to transform their message into an obscured form.
You'll need to decrypt the Quzzl in order to solve it.
- Puzzles - Anagrams, Word Games, Acrostics, and other delights often turn up within a Quzzl. In some
cases, the Quzzl will require you to manipulate a web-based mechanism in some way.
- Cyber Quests - Know the state bird of Idaho? How about the address of Graceland? More importantly, do
you know how to find out? With Google and Wikipedia it's hard for information to hide if you know where to look...so feel free to do so!
- Mathematical Problems - Quzzls may require you to manipulate mathematics to derive their solution.
- Lateral Thinking Problems - This approach refers to solving problems through an indirect and creative
approach. Lateral thinking is about reasoning that is not immediately obvious and about ideas that may not be obtainable by using only
traditional step-by-step logic.
Aids to Play
- Internet Access - Since you're reading this, you've already figured out the primary requirement to play
Quzzl.us.
- Paper and Pencil - Good old-fashioned lead and pulp are often very useful in working out your solutions.
- Thinking Caps - As Sister Alreda would frequently say "Tie them on tightly!" And "two heads are better than one" is often appropos as well!
Match Play Tips
- Strategize! - Pay attention to information on the Hints and Score tabs. You can monitor the
competition's progress and use of hints which may factor into your own strategy.
- Play Fair! - Remember this is Quzzl.us not Cheatl.us! Please play fair...and have fun!
Caveats
- Compatability - Quzzl.us has been tested fairly thoroughly with Internet Explorer (6.0, 7.1, and 8.0)
and Mozilla Firefox (5.0) on Windows. There has also been some testing done with Safari on the Apple iPad. It has not been tested in other
browsers or with mobile devices. Use them at your own risk (and let us know what you find out).
- Multi-Player - While other team Members can launch their own Quzzl.us instance and view/manipulate the Quzzls, only the Captain can enter solutions and buy hints. Unfortunately,
synchronizing multiple instances in real-time is really problematic, so if multiple team members are using separate devices, they'll need to periodically log-in and log-out in order to resync their view with their Team
Captain's. Honestly, sharing the Captain's screen via Zoom is probably a smoother experience for all.
- Beta Release - Quzzl.us is in the early stages of development, thus not all features may be perfectly realized. Please be patient with (and let us know about) any problems you may
encounter.
Hints
Hints are often provided to assist you in solving each Quzzl. Use them when you are stuck and just don't know
what else to do. Instead of being stuck and frustrated a Hint might just jump start your thinking process.
- Time for a Hint? - Hints do not come cheapily, however. There are costs associated with their use.
Before viewing a Hint, be sure to notice the cost associated with it. You are essentially buying some help and the cost (in seconds) will add additional time to your Quzzlution. For example:
- If you solve a Quzzl in 6 minutes, but use two hints (one costing 120 seconds (2 minutes) and one costing 300 seconds (5 minutes), your
Total Time for that Quzzl is 13 minutes: (6 + 2 + 5 = 13)
- A competing team might take 10 minutes to solve the same Quzzl, but if they do it entirely on their own (i.e., without the use of a
Hint) their Quzzl time is just the 10 minutes it took them.
- Thus, even though you would be 4 minutes ahead of the other team according to elapsed clock time, they would be 3 minutes ahead of you in Quzzl
time! If the game ended with no other Quzzls being solved, they would win.
- Finally, if scores (i.e., total times) are tied at the end of a Quzzlus, the team having used the least hint time wins.
- The Cost goes Down! - Be sure to check the cost of Hints periodically. One of the unique features of
Quzzl.us is that the cost of Hints changes as time passes. A Hint that might at first appear to be prohibitively expensive might become much
more attractive as the clock keeps ticking.
- Thank God Almighty! - "Free" Hints are just that. You may view a free Hint without incurring any additional time.
- Guarantee - NOT! - One last note about Hints. Unfortunately, Hints do NOT come with a "time-back"
guarantee. You may discover that a Hint reveals information to you that you've already figured out or doesn't really enhance your ability
to solve the Quzzl. Sorry. C'est la vie. And better luck next time.
